Dissertation

Even after they have finished their studies in veterinary medicine, we would like to offer interested veterinarians the possibility of continuing their training in the fields of bird, reptile and ornamental fish medicine. For this, dissertations are regularly awarded on current scientific topics.

Orientation period:

This lasts six weeks, with two weeks being completed in the bird clinic, two weeks in the reptile clinic and two weeks in the special field (e.g. clinic, bacteriology, virology or pathology). The orientation period is held on five days a week and is oriented on the procedure in the individual departments.

Doctoral student year:

Each doctoral student completes a clinical year in his or her specialist field. The working days are scheduled together with all other doctoral students and employees of the individual departments and usually comprise 2.5 weekdays (depending on the thesis and number of doctoral students). The remaining free days should be used to complete the thesis.

Weekend services:

Each doctoral student must provide assistance regularly at the weekend or on public holidays in the form of a secondary service (an on-duty veterinarian is present). The number of services depends on the number of doctoral students and medical trainees. Here you should expect to provide services at intervals of 4-6 weeks.

Journal Club:

Every Wednesday the Journal Club meets as a mandatory event for every doctoral student. Here, a progress report is drawn up every month on the progress of the doctoral student's own thesis, with any problems that have occurred being discussed together.

Every week, scientific publications from a magazine with a peer review system or a conference are presented and discussed critically. Here, it is not the communication of facts/content which is to the fore, but the presentation of the strengths and weaknesses of the publication under discussion.

Doctoral student retreat:

Twice a year, all doctoral students present their dissertation as a PowerPoint presentation (with a brief overview of the literature, study design and the current status). Here too, any problems that have occurred are discussed jointly.

Application:
